Easy DIY Hexagon Shelves – Erin Spain

When I was making over my living room and home office (full reveal coming soon!), I felt like the wall above the desk really needed something besides just the existing mirror. I opted to throw together these quick and easy DIY hexagon shelves, and they finished the room off nicely! Here’s a quick step by step tutorial, and you can check out my YouTube video for this project here.

Step 1: Cut Your Wood

First, I cut enough wood to make 3 hexagon shelves. So a total of 18 pieces (6 for each hexagon) each cut to 8 inches at a 30 degree bevel at each end (not parallel) with my miter saw.

Step 2: Sand

Next, I sanded each piece and smoothed the rough edges.

Step 3: Build Your Hexagons

Then, I attached each piece using wood glue which I applied with a silicone brush. If you have bar clamps, you could use those, but I don’t so I just used painters tape to hold the pieces in place while the glue cured.

Step 4: Reinforce Joints

After the glue cured, I reinforced it with 3/4″ staples on the back using my Crown Stapler.

Step 5: Sand Again

My miters are never perfect, so I sanded the corners to mask the imperfections a bit. I also made sure to sand off any dried glue residue that was left behind.

Step 6: Paint/Stain/Finish

I really liked the natural look of the wood so I opted to leave it, but you could definitely paint or stain these to suit your style. I just sealed mine with Polycrylic in a Satin finish.

Step 7: Hang Your Shelves

Quick tip: I traced the shelves onto pieces of craft paper and used painter’s tape to position them on the wall so I could get a visual of how the shelves would look and how I wanted to configure them.

After playing around with my templates, I decided to center the shelves above the mirror, staggering the middle one a bit. I hung the shelves using wall anchors and screws (2 per shelf).
